Sweden, together with Norway and Denmark, is investing money in expanding renewable energy in Central America and the Amazon.

"In the Amazon region, the population has very poor access to energy. This guarantee enables nearly SEK 8 billion in renewable investments, with major positive effects for people, the environment and economic development," says Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in a press release.

The news is being presented in connection with the climate summit in Brazil. The total investment is 200 million dollars, equivalent to approximately 1.9 billion kronor. Sweden and Norway are each contributing 50 million dollars and Denmark 100.

The money goes to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). 60 percent goes to the Amazon region and the rest to Central America.

“The effect of the guarantee is significant: For every dollar, the IDB can increase its lending by almost four times,” says Støre.
