Only sauna - and become more at peace with life? A study from the Som Institute shows that sauna bathers are more satisfied with life than those who haven't understood the charm of the warm stones. It's great to sauna, says Freja Wessman, assistant research leader.

That "all worries disappear immediately" is perhaps not entirely true. But the majority of those surveyed in the Som Institute's study think that sauna bathing is "the best for both body and soul."

More Satisfied

Among those who in the fresh study answered that they are very satisfied with life, 54 percent are annual sauna bathers. In the group that stated they are fairly satisfied with life, 45 percent bathe sauna.

Those who are very satisfied with life bathe sauna more often than those who do not, says Freja Wessman, assistant research leader, to TT.

Why it is so is hard to say. We ask no follow-up questions. But we can see that there is a statistically significant correlation, which also stands up to control for other variables such as income, age, and education. I can speculate and say that it is wonderful to sauna.

Sauna Brothers Who Glow

And who are actually "sauna brothers who glow"?

According to the study, it is most common to bathe sauna in the age range 16-29 years. Men bathe sauna to a greater extent than women, and a total of 48 percent of those surveyed state that they bathe sauna at least once a year.

We see some differences in different groups, for example, that younger people bathe more often, says Wessman.

On Saturday, Kaj competes in the final of Eurovision with the hit "Bara bada bastu". Will the humor group's success get us Swedes to bathe even more sauna so that "the sweat just pours"? Freja Wessman believes it.

I absolutely believe in a Kaj effect. It would not surprise me if we see an increased sauna bathing when we measure next time, she says.

48 percent of the surveyed Swedes state that they bathe sauna once a year. 16 percent say they bathe sauna at least once a month.

54 percent of those who state that they are very satisfied with life are annual sauna bathers. In the group "fairly satisfied with life" 45 percent are sauna bathers, and among those who "are not satisfied with life" the figure is 38 percent.

53 percent of the surveyed men have bathed sauna at least once during the last twelve months, 43 percent of the women.

It is most common to bathe sauna in the age group 16-29 years.

Total of 3,750 people responded to the Som Institute's survey, which was conducted during 2023 and 2024.
