Mohamed Salah also scored Egypt's second goal in the African Cup of Nations. The Liverpool star chipped in a 1-0 penalty against South Africa, the only goal of the match, just before half-time.
In the opening match against Zimbabwe on Monday, Salah scored the winning goal (2–1) in extra time. Against South Africa on Friday, it was more about holding on to the lead once you had it. Shortly after the opening goal, Mohamed Hany received his second yellow card, and Egypt had to play just over a half with a man less on the pitch.
Despite heavy South African pressure, Egypt held out and are the first team to qualify for the round of 16, with a maximum of six points. South Africa have three and Zimbabwe and Angola each have one after sharing the points, 1–1, on Friday.
