Russian fighter jets of the model Mig-31 violated Estonia's airspace for 12 minutes. This is absolutely an escalation compared to what we saw in Poland recently. 12 minutes is exceptional, says Lieutenant Colonel Johan Huovinen.

Huovinen, who is active at the National Defence University, refers to the fact that over 20 drones alleged to belong to Russia were shot down over Poland earlier in September.

According to reports, the Russian planes were chased away by the American fighter plane F-35, which belonged to the Italian air force, and which was part of NATO's "air policing", i.e. the military alliance's defence of the airspace.

The F-35 is a superior aircraft to the Mig-31, so it was good that they showed up, says Johan Huovinen.

He reacts most to the fact that Russia is alleged to have used the Mig-31 aircraft near the Baltic Sea. Normally, they operate in the Murmansk area and not near the Gulf of Finland. It is one of the world's fastest fighter planes and can be a carrier of the hypersonic missile Kinzhal, which is difficult for air defence to combat.

It is very tense that they show that they can fly out and that they would then use Kinzhal in the Baltic Sea. Then you can make a right turn towards Poland, or towards Germany or Sweden.

Johan Huovinen believes that the violation will result in strengthened NATO resources over the Baltic region.
