The deployment of soldiers from NATO countries to Greenland has prompted dissatisfaction in Russia, which, like the United States, has major interests in the Arctic.

Moscow is “seriously concerned” about the situation in “the higher latitudes,” according to a statement from the Russian embassy in Belgium, where NATO is headquartered.

On Wednesday, Sweden, Norway, Germany and France announced they were sending military personnel to Greenland to strengthen the island's defenses. The announcement came the same day that Danish and Greenlandic representatives met with the US vice president and secretary of state in Washington, DC, for talks about Greenland's future.

"There is no imminent threat from China or Russia that we cannot handle," said Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen after the meeting.

Rasmussen also said it is clear that US President Donald Trump wants to "conquer" Greenland.
