Moscow is “seriously concerned” about the situation in “the higher latitudes,” according to a statement from the Russian embassy in Belgium, where NATO is headquartered.
NATO is building up a military presence on the island “under the false pretext that there is a growing threat from Moscow and Beijing,” the embassy claims.
On Wednesday, Sweden, Norway, Germany and France announced that they are sending military personnel to Greenland to strengthen the island's defenses. The announcement came the same day that Danish and Greenlandic representatives met with the US Vice President and Secretary of State in Washington, DC, to discuss Greenland's future and security.
"There is no imminent threat from China or Russia that we cannot handle," said Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen after the meeting.
Rasmussen also noted that it is clear that US President Donald Trump wants to "conquer" Greenland.
