Peace talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States are set to continue in Geneva next week, according to the Russian government. However, Ukraine is concerned that Russia is replacing its delegation leader.

Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, tells Russian and international media that the next round will be held in an Alpine town in Switzerland on February 17-18.

The announcement is confirmed by Ukraine. But media in Kyiv also note that the Russians are replacing the leader of their delegation. This could signal that the next round of peace talks will be more difficult, they say.

Russia says presidential envoy Vladimir Medinsky will lead the delegation at the meetings next week. He also led the Russian side in last year's negotiations, which were essentially fruitless, and is seen as uncompromising.

At the latest meetings in Abu Dhabi, the head of military intelligence, Igor Kostyukov, was instead in charge. The Ukrainian side has described this as a "qualitative difference" in the more constructive direction, writes The Kyiv Independent.

The US has also been reported to have signalled that it does not want men like Medinsky at the table.

After the meetings in Abu Dhabi, most recently last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that new talks would be held "in a week" and probably in Miami, the United States. Now the plans appear to have changed somewhat.
