The government and society have not kept up when gangs have gone online to recruit young people to commit serious crimes, according to Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M).

It is obvious that the gangs, under strong pressure from the police and others, have also regrouped in several ways, he says in an interview with Aftonbladet, when asked what he has failed to do.

Like quickly moving the recruitment of children from the schoolyard to mobile phones. We lost ground there, and now the whole of society must do everything it takes to catch up, says Strömmer.

The government hopes that a legal change made on October 1 will be a countermeasure - the police are now allowed to intercept and read messages on the mobile phones of children under 15 years of age.

It sounds repressive, but it is actually a way to protect children and work on crime prevention, says Strömmer.
