The British pop star Rod Stewart was booed at a concert in Leipzig, Germany, when he showed his support for Ukraine.

It was when the singer, wearing a yellow shirt and blue jacket, introduced the song "Rhythm of my Heart" on Friday and dedicated it to the Ukrainian people and army, accompanied by a strong insult to Russian President Vladimir Putin, that the audience responded with a chorus of boos and whistles, reports news agency Tag 24.

Rod Stewart has been a vocal critic of Russia's invasion and has privately rented a house for Ukrainian refugees in the UK. According to German media, his gesture was well received at previous concerts in Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam.

Michael Roth, foreign policy spokesperson for Chancellor Olaf Scholz, called Stewart "today's hero" on Sunday.

"Thanks for your solidarity with the Ukrainian people!" he wrote on X.

Germany has shown strong support for Ukraine, but public opinion is divided on the issue. Both extreme left- and right-wing parties that are against the government's support for Ukraine had significant successes in last week's European Championship election.
