Over 20 people were trapped under the rubble during the collapse. About ten have been rescued from the rubble during the search effort, several of them have serious injuries, according to local police.
The authorities are still investigating the cause of the collapse and we have questioned the owner and workers at the quarry, says police officer Sumarni, who like many Indonesians only uses one name.
The police have, together with rescue personnel, military personnel and volunteers, tried to find additional victims, but the work has been complicated by unstable ground and the risk of further landslides.
Illegal mining operations are not uncommon in Indonesia, and those who work there often do so under dangerous conditions. Among other things, the risk is great for landslides and floods.
