The 32-year-old neither admitted nor denied any wrongdoing when he appeared behind a glass wall, wearing shackles and a suicide prevention suit from the prison.
At his lawyer's request, the detention hearing was postponed until January 7. Nick Reiner only made an admission to the judge that he agreed to the date.
Star director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, and their son Nick – who made a film with his father inspired by his own struggle with addiction and mental illness – was immediately suspected of the double murder.
Nick Reiner was supposed to appear in court on Tuesday, but his lawyer Alan Jackson announced that he "was not taken from custody to court for medical reasons."
Jackson is a high-profile defense attorney and former prosecutor in Los Angeles who represented, among others, Harvey Weinstein at his trial in Los Angeles.
Speaking to reporters outside court, Jackson said the case needed to be handled with "restraint and dignity."
The prosecutor in the case is Assistant District Attorney Habib Balian, who was most recently involved in the trial where the Menendez brothers sought to have their convictions reviewed.
