The power supply to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, damaged in Russian attacks, has reportedly begun to be repaired.

The repairs are taking place after the UN atomic energy agency, the IAEA, negotiated a local ceasefire, Reuters reports on its website.

An IAEA working group is overseeing the repair work, which is estimated to take a few days. The aim is to avoid a nuclear accident in the midst of the war in Ukraine, according to the IAEA.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, has been occupied by Russian forces since March 2022. It has not produced electricity for more than three years and all six reactors are shut down. But the plant needs electricity to cool the reactors and avoid a meltdown.

The plant's future operation is one of the sensitive issues that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to raise during Sunday's meeting with US President Donald Trump.
