Last year, 23 percent of disposable income went to paying for housing – and the largest share of income is paid by single women over 64 years of age, statistics from Statistics Sweden show.

Households in rental housing spend the largest proportion of their income on housing – 27 percent. For households in tenant-owned housing, the corresponding proportion is 21 percent and households in owned single-family homes 18 percent.

The reason why the share of disposable income is greater for households in rental properties is not because they have higher housing costs – but because they have lower disposable income on average, according to Statistics Sweden.

The proportion of income that goes to housing also depends on the composition of the household. Single people, both with and without children, use 28 and 29 percent of their disposable income, respectively.

The largest proportion – 37 percent – is paid by single women over the age of 64 in rental housing. The corresponding figure for the same group living in condominiums is 28 percent and in single-family homes 26 percent.

The smallest share is paid by household types living together without children and other households, for example households with adult children, with around 17 percent.
