Seven years after the murder of regime critic Jamal Khashoggi, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was welcomed by President Donald Trump to Washington, D.C. Several agreements are expected to be signed and bin Salman promises $1 trillion in investments in the United States.

The red carpet was rolled out when bin Salman arrived and was received by Trump shortly after 5 p.m., Swedish time.

Mounted military personnel paraded past and fighter jets flew overhead before the two leaders disappeared into the White House.

Proud of the prince's work

At a press conference in the Oval Office ahead of the deliberations, Trump praised bin Salman – who is visiting the United States for the first time since the murder of Khashoggi – for doing a “fantastic” job “on human rights.”

"I'm proud of the work he's done," Trump said.

During the press conference, Bin Salman sugarcoated an earlier promise to invest $600 billion in the United States. The new figure is $1,000 billion.

Real investments and real opportunities, said the Crown Prince, adding that it involves, for example, investments in technology and AI.

Fighter jet business

Trump has previously announced that the US will most likely sell F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, despite concerns from Israel. Cooperation agreements on nuclear energy development and AI infrastructure are also on the agenda.

Trump also hopes that the Saudis will be open to signing the so-called Abraham Accords, White House sources told NBC News.

Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who lived in exile in the United States and wrote for The Washington Post, was murdered in 2018 after disappearing during a visit to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. US intelligence agencies have concluded that bin Salman was the one who ultimately gave the green light for the murder, which has significantly frozen relations between the countries.
