Since Magyar was sworn in on May 9, he has pushed to purge people appointed under former leader Viktor Orbán - including President Tamás Sulyok.
Sulyok had been given a deadline to resign voluntarily, but that expired on Sunday. Now Magyar says members of his Tisza party will immediately begin “necessary procedures” to remove the president, which are expected to take around a month.
Social conservative Tisza won a two-thirds majority in the April elections, which opened the way for constitutional amendments.
"Hungary does not belong to Tamás Sulyok or Viktor Orbán. It does not belong to a single party or political system," Magyar said on Monday, according to Hungarian media.
