The restart of the World Cup will be difficult for the Norwegian biathletes following the death of Sivert Guttorm Bakken. That's why the national team has brought a psychologist to Oberhof. "It's absolutely fantastic," Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen told TV 2.

The Norwegian biathlon national team is facing major challenges after teammate Guttorm Bakken was found dead in his bed the day before Christmas Eve.

Even though Bakken died in Lavazè, Italy, where the Norwegian national team usually holds training camps, they will return there for their pre-Olympic camp. Everyone was unanimous in the decision.

We've had a little discussion about it, and several people think that Sivert would have kicked us hard in the shins if we had chosen the second-best option, says sports director Per Arne Botnan to TV2.

Psychologist is present

To get help processing their emotions, the Norwegian biathlon national team has brought psychologist Arne Jørstad Riise to Oberhof.

"It's absolutely fantastic. I advise everyone to do that. When you're going through tough times, no matter what they are, the worst thing you can do is sit alone with your thoughts. You have to share them with someone," says Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen at a press conference.

“Be sad and perform”

Competing this week will not be easy for the Norwegians.

You have to be prepared to be able to perform. Do both parts. You can grieve and perform at the same time. It's about focusing on what you have to do, says Martin Uldal.

"We agree that it is not dangerous to show emotions if you are going to go out and perform in a ski race. It will probably be a roller coaster of emotions tomorrow," says Christiansen.

The Oberhof competitions begin with a sprint on Thursday.

The cause of Bakken's death is still unclear. He was wearing a high-altitude mask when he was found by teammate Johan-Olav Botn, but autopsy results will take several months.
