Hussam Abu Safia, head of the Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza, has been injured by Israeli shelling, according to media reports.

The hospital in Beit Lahia is said to have been repeatedly shelled since Thursday.

On Saturday, Abu Safia stated that the Israeli attacks seem to be aimed at forcing the hospital staff to flee – which they have refused to do since Israel began its siege of the area six weeks ago.

Shortly afterwards, reports emerged that Abu Safia had been injured. He was hit in the back and one leg by metal fragments in connection with an Israeli attack on the hospital, according to civil defense spokesperson Mahmud Bassal. According to Bassal, the doctor lost a lot of blood, but his condition is stable.

In a video clip, Abu Safia vows from his hospital bed to continue his work, no matter what.

Israel claims not to be aware of any attacks on or around Kamal Adwan, writes AP. The hospital is one of two in northern Gaza that can still receive patients.
