It is an unusually untested goaltending trio that Potter is relying on in the playoff semi-final against Ukraine in Valencia next Thursday.

But Potter believes that Kristoffer Nordfeldt, Noel Törnqvist and Melker Ellborg are up to the task.

"Yes, absolutely. Otherwise it would be strange to pick them. It's a nice mix of some experience, talent and good qualities," says Graham Potter.

Ellborg a debutant

Noel Törnqvist, the 24-year-old who left the golden team Mjällby for the Italian Como last fall, has been in recent national team squads, but is still waiting for his debut for Blågult. Former Malmö FF goalkeeper Melker Ellborg, 22 years old and now in the English Sunderland, is in the squad for the first time.

That makes AIK's Kristoffer Nordfeldt, 36, by far the most experienced goalkeeper in Sweden's squad for the World Cup playoffs next week. But Nordfeldt still only has 18 senior international caps under his belt, only three of which were competitive.

Potter doesn't see it as a problem going into a World Cup playoff with three goalkeepers with so little experience at this level.

I understand the question, but I think we have a good mix of different types of experience. Kristoffer and Noel did well in the last camp so I trust them a lot. Then Melker has come into the Premier League with all that it means in a good way. So I am happy with this solution.

Injury and illness interfere

Potter took over as national team manager after Jon Dahl Tomasson was sacked in October. In his first stint, the final World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Slovenia in November, he entrusted Stoke's Viktor Johansson between the posts in the first match while Derby's Jacob Widell Zetterström guarded goal in the second.

Now Johansson is injured and Widell Zetterström is ill. One alternative was therefore to call up Robin Olsen, the Malmö FF veteran who left the national team last fall after disliking Jon Dahl Tomasson's leadership style.

"I have a lot of respect for Robin, and we've had a good chat. But I had to make a decision and then it came down to this," says Graham Potter.

If Sweden defeats Ukraine, a decisive playoff match awaits in Solna on March 31, against either Poland or Albania. The winner of the final will advance to this summer's World Cup.
