More people than in previous years sought help from Sweden's city missions over Christmas 2025, the organization said in a press release.

Over 17,000 children and 5,200 households in financial distress received help from the Swedish City Missions in connection with Christmas. This compares with 2024, when the Swedish City Missions helped 14,600 people in total, including adults and children.

Around 40,000 Christmas presents and food gift certificates were distributed, double the number in 2024.

The number of people living in poverty in Sweden has almost doubled since 2021 - according to Statistics Sweden, approximately 700,000 people live in economic and social vulnerability.

"Unfortunately, we believe that poverty in Sweden will continue to increase with the benefit reform that the Riksdag is expected to decide on in the spring," says Jonas Rydberg, Secretary General of the Swedish City Missions.
