When all votes are counted, Nawrocki gets 50.9 percent and his opponent, Warsaw's mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, gets 49.1.

But before the official result was clear, both presidential candidates declared victory in Poland during the night.

We will win and we will save Poland, said Nawrocki during his election vigil in Warsaw.

Support from Trump

The relatively young historian Nawrocki, 42 years old, has among other things support and is for a stricter support policy towards Ukraine.

Nawrocki has visited Trump in the White House and has used an anti-Ukrainian rhetoric during his election campaign. US flags have been commonly seen at his election meetings and his supporters have hoped for better chances of good relations with the US, conservative values and stricter rules on immigration.

Nawrocki takes over after Andrzej Duda, who is also supported by the right-wing party Law and Justice (PIS). Duda congratulates on Monday to the victory and thanks the voters for the voter turnout of 71.6 percent.

On Monday evening, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a vote of confidence in the country's parliament to see if he has continued support to rule the country when Nawrocki becomes head of state.

Tight race

The first round of voting was held on May 18, but since then all opinion polls have indicated that it would be a tight race between the two presidential candidates.

It also swung quickly. In the first exit polls, it looked like Rafal Trzaskowski had a narrow lead. He also made a premature victory cry before the wave finally tipped over in Nawrocki's favor.

The more EU-friendly and relatively liberal Trzaskowski congratulates his opponent.

"I regret that I did not manage to convince the majority of citizens of my vision for Poland", he writes in social media.

In Poland, the president is elected for a period of five years. The country is a member of the EU and NATO and has had a leading role in the diplomacy surrounding the Ukraine war.
