West Ham was able to report on Sunday that Antonio had undergone surgery for a fracture in the lower part of his body. However, the exact extent of the Jamaican's injury is not clear.
"Michail will be kept under observation at the hospital for the coming days," wrote the English football club on its website.
Michail Antonio crashed his car on Saturday afternoon and the rescue service had to help him out of the vehicle where he was stuck, according to BBC.
The Guardian writes that the striker – who with his 68 goals is West Ham's top scorer in the Premier League – is expected to be out of play for at least a year.
On Monday evening, West Ham will host Wolverhampton. It will be the first league match of the year without Michail Antonio in the team. To show their support, the teammates will warm up in special jerseys with Antonio's name and number on.
They will also enter the pitch before kick-off wearing specially designed jerseys that will be auctioned off. Even the match jerseys, both West Ham's and Wolverhampton's, will be sold at auction.
West Ham's board has promised to match the amount they receive and all proceeds will go to charitable purposes.
