Greece is one of the largest destinations for migrants leaving Asia, Africa, and the Middle East for a future within the EU's borders. The number of those who have sought their way via the waters south of Crete in the Mediterranean has increased significantly recently.
On Saturday, 280 people were rescued from five capsized boats; at least 13 of the rescued were children, according to the Greek coastguard.
In recent days, a total of over 500 migrants taken care of by Greek sea rescue, according to official figures on Sunday.
Many of those who seek the Mediterranean route set off from Libya. One of those taken care of on Saturday was a Sudanese man suspected of trafficking.
