Over 200,000 people have been injured or killed during the ongoing war in Gaza, according to Israel's former army chief Herzi Halevi.

During the week, he appeared at an open meeting in southern Israel where he said that "over 200,000 people" have been injured or killed in Gaza with its 2.2 million inhabitants, reports The Guardian.

Herzi Halevi has until March this year led the Israeli forces in the war, which started on October 7, 2023, with the Hamas terror attack.

The figures are close to what the Hamas-controlled health authority in Gaza has stated. The latest figure amounts to over 64,000 killed and over 163,000 injured, where combatants and civilians are not distinguished. The health authority's figures are often reported by UN agencies and international organizations.

At the meeting, Herzi Halevi also said that military operations have "not been stopped once" by Israel's legal counsel.

This is not a cautious war. We took off the gloves from the very beginning, he said, but emphasized that Israel follows international humanitarian law.
