Pakistan has called in the army after major floods in the eastern parts of the country. The country accuses India of having worsened the situation with dam releases, which creates tensions between the neighbors.

The reason for the floods is heavy monsoon rain in combination with India's decision to release water from overflowing dams. This is stated by Pakistani authorities.

The number of people being evacuated from the border province of Punjab is up to 174,000. Large cities like Lahore and Faisalabad are also affected.

On Wednesday, 34 people were killed and at least 18 injured in the Indian-controlled Jammu region of Kashmir. Part of a mountainside collapsed and fell over a popular pilgrimage route. Many of the bodies were found under boulders and rocks.

Three months ago, the parties had a conflict where India repealed an agreement that regulated how rivers shared between the countries are handled.

Pakistan is one of the world's most vulnerable countries to climate change. In recent years, the country has been hit by drought, heatwaves and downpours.

Since the end of June, 800 people have been killed as a result of the heavy downpours.
