When Alexander Ovechkin scored to make it 1-0 in the away game against Nashville, his Washington Capitals lost 3-2, and the ice hockey forward reached 20 goals for the season and a new milestone.
He is now alone in second place on the NHL's record list for the number of seasons with at least 20 goals - the leader, Gordie Howe, reached that tally in 22 consecutive seasons from 1949 to 1971 while playing for Detroit.
In the spring of 2025, Ovechkin became the NHL's all-time leading scorer when he passed Wayne Gretzky (894 goals), and the 40-year-old is now up to 917 regular-season goals.
He already holds other records, such as most seasons with 30 goals (19) and with 40 goals (14), and he shares the NHL record for seasons with at least 50 goals (9) with Gretzky and Mike Bossy, according to the NHL website.
Corrected version: In a previously broadcast version, the wrong number of goals was stated for Wayne Gretzky.
