Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán criticizes Sweden in another post on X addressed to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party).

”Sweden is our friend. The Swedish people are our friends. But your government is not Hungary's friend", writes Orbán on X.

Furthermore, the Hungarian Prime Minister lists a number of occasions that he believes support his claim. Among other things, he means that Sweden voted to exclude Hungarian universities from exchange programs, and that the Swedish EU Minister wants to put "increased pressure" on Hungary because the country opposes a future membership in the EU for Ukraine.

”In Hungary, we call this behavior several things, but friendly is definitely not one of them”, writes Orbán and continues:

”Every country has its problems. In Sweden, migration is one of them. But unlike you, we do not interfere with others' sovereignty or internal affairs and do not lecture other countries – we will, however, continue to worry about you and the Swedish people."

Responds the Prime Minister

The post comes as a response to the open letter that Ulf Kristersson published during Wednesday – which in turn was a response to a number of posts where Orbán in recent days has criticized Sweden and portrayed the country as a dystopia.

”I understand that it is an election campaign in your country, and that you are this time really challenged for power. But we do not interfere in your election campaign and we do not want to be a part of it”, wrote Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Wednesday's open letter.

TT has sought Kristersson for a comment on Orbán's latest attack, but he refers via his press secretary to the open letter.

”Only regret”

Also, Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (The Moderate Party) connects Orbán's attacks to Hungary's election campaign.

One draws Sweden into one's election campaign, and there we do not want to be, said Malmer Stenergard to TT earlier during Thursday, before Orbán's latest outburst.

How harmful is it that Orbán throws these accusations against Sweden?

I am content with noting that it is part of an election campaign, that I can only regret.
