The Right Party is to work towards making surrogate motherhood legal in Norway over the next four years. The decision was made by a clear majority at the party's national meeting over the weekend, reports VG.

Thus, the Progress Party (FRP) is going further than the liberal party Venstre, which earlier this spring decided that they want to allow regulated and non-commercial surrogate motherhood in Norway.

During a debate preceding the voting, party leader Sylvi Listhaug that it is an ethical issue for her and advised members against voting yes. She thought the decision went too far:

I mean that the decision opens the door for something more, it opens the door for receiving payment. Then I think we are on the wrong track.

One of those who voted for the proposal is Julianne Ofstad, vice chairman of the Oslo City Council. She believes it will help more people's dreams of having their own children come true.

By allowing surrogate motherhood, we can ensure that it takes place under orderly conditions here at home, instead of it only being possible for those who can afford to travel abroad and pay themselves, she says to NRK.
