The Norwegian government is allocating NOK 172 billion - approximately SEK 160 billion - to defence in its revised budget. This corresponds to 3.3 per cent of the country's GDP.

It is a significant increase from the 2.15 percent that was originally budgeted.

The government wants to facilitate the military having a high level of activity and being able to carry out planned operational activities. It is important for our security and preparedness, says Defense Minister Tore O Sandvik from the Social Democratic AP.

The foreign ministers of NATO countries are meeting on Thursday in Turkish Antalya to discuss a new spending target ahead of the summit in The Hague in June. Several leaders have long seen the current target, that members should spend 2 percent of GDP on defense, as insufficient, and US President Donald Trump has spoken of levels of up to 5 percent.
