"Regardless of what policy is adopted and what proposal is presented in Seoul, we have no interest in it and there is no reason to meet or any issue to discuss", Kim Yo-Jung announces via the closed country's propaganda organ KCNA.

This is the first statement from North Korea regarding South Korea's new president Lee Jae-Myung, who has promised to try to "restore trust" between the countries and try to initiate "unconditional" talks to ease the tensions.

Lee, who was elected in June, has already stopped propaganda broadcasts directed via loudspeakers at North Korea, which in turn has caused the northern neighbor to cease its corresponding broadcasts.

The tensions on the Korean peninsula deteriorated during the time of the previous South Korean president Yoon Suk-Yeol in office. He was in turn impeached, accused of attempted insurrection due to the fact that he in December last year declared a sudden state of emergency with war laws.

The two countries have never made peace after the war in 1950-1953, but instead an armistice still applies.
