In the investigation, NHTSA will look at a total of 58 cases where the cars have driven through red lights or on the wrong side of the road. On several occasions, the cars have even crashed into other vehicles and caused damage.
2.9 million cars are covered by the new investigation.
Tesla has in previous lawsuits claimed that they have repeatedly reminded drivers that the function does not mean that the vehicles can drive completely on their own and that the person behind the wheel must be constantly ready to intervene.
In September this year, the traffic safety authority launched another investigation into 174,000 Tesla cars, regarding broken electronic door handles.
