The five-year plan also involves the sale of drilling licenses off the coast of Alaska.
The United States has not allowed oil drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico since 1995. Off the coast of California, there are active oil platforms, but no new licenses have been issued since the mid-1980s.
The plan is part of Trump's effort to roll back predecessor Joe Biden's climate policies and produce more fossil fuels.
A spokesman for California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom criticizes the plan for “threatening communities and undermining economic stability” along the coast.
Even Republicans in Florida, like Trump friend and Senator Rick Scott, are against new oil drilling.
Both politicians and environmental organizations also warn that the risks of oil spills are potentially catastrophic for the ecosystem.
