The researchers have identified a previously unknown subgroup of so-called cancer-associated fibroblasts – connective tissue cells that surround the tumor. Unlike previously known types, which help the tumor to grow and resist treatment, the newly discovered cells appear to have the opposite effect.
They strengthen the immune system and prevent cancer cells from spreading, says Daniel Öhlund, associate professor and leader of the study to SVT.
The discovery may in the long run lead to new treatment methods that increase the patients' chances of survival.
