New cable break in the Gulf of Finland - ship seized

A data communication cable between Helsinki and Tallinn has been damaged in the Gulf of Finland, Finnish media report. A ship suspected of being behind the incident has been seized.

According to the Finnish Border Guard, a ship believed to be behind the cable break has been identified. The ship had its anchor chain in the water and has been seized.

The damage was discovered on New Year's Eve morning in Estonia's exclusive economic zone.

The incident is being investigated on suspicion of causing serious damage and of seriously disrupting postal and telecommunications traffic, according to Hufvudstadsbladet.

The case is being investigated by the police and other authorities.

The cable is owned by Finnish telecom company Elisa, police said in a statement. The ship suspected of being behind the cable break was located by the border guard vessel Turva and a helicopter in Finnish waters.

According to Iltalehti, the seized ship is the Fitburg, which sails under the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Attorney General has announced an indictment in the case. Finnish President Alexander Stubb announced that the authorities are monitoring developments.

“Finland is prepared for security challenges of various kinds, and we respond to them as needed,” he writes on X.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has also commented on the incident on X.

"The Finnish authorities are functioning," writes Orpo, adding that the government is monitoring the situation closely.
