Netflix and PBS get shared custody of "Sesame Street". The same day as the programs are broadcast on public service in the USA, they will also be available globally at the streaming giant.
The educational children's program "Sesame Street" has been broadcast since 1969 and uses, like its sister program "Mupparna", hand puppets, which is more entertainment-oriented and has been broadcast in several rounds in Sweden.
In early May, the US President Donald Trump ordered to withdraw the federal grants to PBS, whose activities he described as partisan.
The federal grants account for approximately 15 percent of the annual budget for American public service TV. The rest comes in through donations, sponsorships, and contributions from viewers. Trump's decision is a hard blow to public service and is expected to result in reductions.
The cooperation with Netflix, however, allows them to focus more on "Sesame Street".
"This unique cooperation gives us the opportunity to provide our scientifically designed curriculum to young children, while we can ensure that children around the USA can continue to have free access to 'Sesame Street' that they love", says the production company Sesame Workshop in a press release, according to AP.
