Netflix is investing in live sports again. The streaming service has purchased the broadcasting rights to the women's World Championship in football 2027 and 2031. However, the rights only apply to the USA.
The deal is reported to be the largest made by the International Football Association (Fifa) with a streaming service. The exact amount is unknown, however.
"This agreement sends a strong message about the true value of Fifa's women's World Championship and global women's sports," writes Gianni Infantino, Fifa's president, in a press release.
The last time Netflix invested heavily in live sports was the highly publicized boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. Netflix received much criticism for the broadcast, which was of poor quality.
The 2027 World Championship will be held in Brazil, while the host for 2031 has not been appointed yet.
