Navalny, the widow of opposition leader Aleksey Navalny, says she hopes for long-term cooperation with the organization Reporters Without Borders, which is behind the new channel Russia's Future.
There is nearly total censorship in Russia, and in a dictatorship, it is hard to spread information," says Navalny, who is in exile in Paris. Her husband Navalny died in a Russian prison in February.
The TV channel will broadcast programs via the satellite platform driven by Reporters Without Borders. Contributions from the group around Navalny make up material that is currently produced for and broadcast on social media platforms. However, many of their broadcasts never reach Russia as Russian authorities manage to block social media platforms.
Furthermore, a large part of independent media monitoring in Russia is prohibited or stopped.
We believe it is very important that we reach out to the Russian population as much as possible," says Thibaut Bruttin, chairman of Reporters Without Borders.
About 45 percent of Russia's population uses satellite reception for TV viewing.
