Nato is ready to militarily defend its airspace if Russia continues to violate it. This is stated by Britain's Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper in a speech to the UN. Sweden's Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (The Moderate Party) condemned Russia's actions in a speech.

Russia's repeated violations of NATO countries' airspace are an "imperialist war-mongering" that threatens international peace and security, says Yvette Cooper in the UN Security Council.

To President Putin, I say that your ruthless actions risk a direct armed conflict between NATO and Russia, says Cooper.

We are resolute, and if we are forced to confront aircraft that are in our airspace without permission, we will do so, she continues according to The Guardian.

Strengthening determination

The meeting comes after a request from Estonia. On Friday, the country's border was violated by Russia when combat aircraft of the type Mig-31 were in Estonian airspace for twelve minutes.

The Russian intrusion occurred after reports that over 20 Russian drones had violated Poland's airspace earlier in September and were shot down by NATO planes. A drone has also violated Romania's airspace in connection with a Russian attack in Ukraine.

Maria Malmer Stenergard said in a speech to the Security Council that "Russia has once again shown its ruthless behavior".

It only strengthens our determination to meet this threat by maintaining our sovereignty and territorial integrity and further intensifying our support for Ukraine, she said in her speech, which she held on behalf of the Nordic countries.

USA: Stop immediately

Similar words came from several other European speakers.

US UN Ambassador Mike Waltz had also warned Russia.

The USA and our allies will defend every inch of NATO territory. Russia must stop its dangerous actions immediately, he said.
