Nato must take a "quantum leap in our collective defense" to meet the growing instability and threat from Russia. This is what Mark Rutte will say in a speech in London on Monday, according to excerpts that Nato has released in advance.
In addition to a 400 percent increase in air and missile defense, Rutte will in the speech request thousands more armored vehicles and millions more artillery grenades. Such an increase would meet the demand of US President Donald Trump that member countries should spend the equivalent of 5 percent of their GDP on defense.
Rutte will meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, ahead of the Nato summit in the Netherlands in a couple of weeks.
According to Russia, Nato is a "tool for aggression and confrontation", says Kremlin spokesperson Dmitrij Peskov about the reports of Rutte's planned statement.
