Before the meeting in Naples, a tribute film dedicated to the Argentine football legend, who was 60 years old when he died on November 25, 2020, was shown.
At the stadium, since named after Maradona, the Napoli fans responded by chanting "Diego, Diego" and in the 10th minute of the match (his shirt number) they sang "there is only one Maradona".
It took Napoli even longer to break through to the visitors from Azerbaijan. Rasmus Højlund missed a penalty in the second half before Scott McTominay finally scored 1–0 (in the 66th minute) and was behind 2–0 (own goal in the 72nd).
Chelsea also beat Barcelona 3-0 at home at Stamford Bridge.
Barça, down to ten men for the entire second half after Ronald Araújo's sending-off, had 20-year-old Swede Roony Bardghji on the bench for the entire match. Another youngster, Chelsea's 18-year-old youngster Estêvão, thundered in 2-0 after a delicious solo effort.
In Manchester, Erling Braut Haaland started on the bench when City hosted Bayer Leverkusen. The Norwegian goal scorer came on midway through the second half, but by then the Germans had already shocked the home team with two goals. Leverkusen won 2-0.
In a cold spell in Northern Norway, Sondre Fet looked to have salvaged a point for Bodø/Glimt against Juventus, when he fired in a penalty in the 87th minute to make it 2–2. But at the start of extra time, Jonathan David was able to tap in a goalkeeper's rebound that gave "Juve" the victory, 3–2.
A couple of Swedish national team players were also on the move. Daniel Svensson played the entire match as his Borussia Dortmund team beat Villarreal at home. Svensson got the last word when he sneaked into the penalty area and headed in the final score 4–0 in extra time.
And in Newcastle, Anthony Elanga was brought on away against Olympique Marseille. The home team came back to win 2–1 after two quick goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the start of the second half.
