Those who thought that Monday's press conference with the Spanish team would clear up the question marks were disappointed.
Spain meets the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, and when asked if Rafael Nadal would play singles, doubles, or not at all, the answer was:
It's a question for the captain, said Nadal and got a broad smile and a laugh from Spanish DC captain David Ferrer, who sat beside him, writes AP.
When the same question was directed at Ferrer, he replied:
I don't know yet. Right now, I haven't decided who will play tomorrow.
The 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal announced last month that he would end his tennis career after the Davis Cup finals in Malaga.
On Monday, he elaborated:
It's not meaningful to continue when I don't have the chance to be as competitive as I want when my body says no.
However, he emphasized that his focus is not on retirement.
I'm not here to quit, but to help the team win. The feelings can come later. There will be a big change in my life after this week, he said.
Nadal, who played in Båstad last summer, has had major injury problems over the past two years and has only played 25 tournament matches during that time.
His last tournament was the Olympic Games in Paris, where he was eliminated in the second round of the singles tournament against Novak Djokovic and in the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament, where he played with Carlos Alcaraz.
Besides Nadal and Alcaraz, Marcel Granollers, Roberto Bautista Agut, and Pedro Martinez are also part of Spain's Davis Cup team.

Semifinals: Germany or Canada-Netherlands/Spain (Friday), Italy/Argentina-USA/Australia (Saturday).
