One piece of good advice to the competitors ahead of today's World Cup sprint: Make sure to shake off your Alvar Myhlback before the race. In the World Cup, I'm the best at double-poling, says the 19-year-old cross-country skier ahead of the Tour de Ski decider.

After four races in one Italian ski resort (Toblach), the Tour de Ski has landed in another (Val di Fiemme) for the final two stages. Today's sprint is particularly interesting because it will be contested on the same course and in the same style (classic) that will be used at the Olympics in just under six weeks.

"It's especially fun to test the course. It's a fun last hill and a pretty tough course. And it's fun to be in the area and get a little Olympic feeling," says Johanna Hagström.

She won the only World Cup sprint in classic style of the season so far, in Trondheim in early December. On the same day, another Swedish skier, Alvar Myhlback, made a big splash in the men's race.

Peculiar tactics

Using a unique tactic, in which the 19-year-old pushed through the entire race, he finished third.

"It meant a lot. When you put in so much time and energy and sacrifice everything, the successes are what make it worth it. That's what you live for," says Myhlback.

However, he does not believe that it's possible to repeat exactly the same tactic as in Trondheim.

"No, not really. I need to use my whole body a bit more here," says Myhlback.

"I'm far from the best at 'diagonal stride,' and I have a slight feeling that it will be decided there."

So far, the Tour hasn't progressed much. He is 44th overall, just over four minutes behind leader Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, with placements of 46–58–45–44.

"The Tour has been terrible. But every day is a new day to do well," says Myhlback.

Best in the world?

If there is to be more success today, it is the sprint that will take him there. Few in the world's top can compete with him - if anyone.

"No, it's zero. In the World Cup, I'm the best at double poling."

What specifically are you so good at?

"I'm the best at double poling, haha. No, but it takes a lot of technique and muscle endurance. It looks ugly but it's pretty fast."

He showed that in Vasaloppet last year, when he became the youngest skier ever to take a sensational victory. And he showed that again in Trondheim earlier this winter, when he was beaten only by Norwegians Johannes Høsflot Klæbo and Oskar Opstad Vike.

The course in Val di Fiemme has been slightly redesigned compared to before. It is longer and tougher and has a demanding final climb before descending towards the finish area.

"But the course should suit me anyway," says Alvar Myhlback.

"It's a riot."

The qualifying session begins at 12:15. The final session starts at 2:45.
