Rising food prices are affecting many elderly people. Several municipalities have reduced supplies of salmon and beef in elderly care, among other things.

Just over 30 of 211 responding municipalities have cut back on food, according to a survey from Ekot and P4. Items that have disappeared include Bregott, flavored yogurt, meat and fish.

At a retirement home in Arboga, the Sunday roast has been canceled. Rahaf Ramdo (KD) of the Social Affairs Committee cited budget requirements.

"If they cut back on food and it gets worse, you don't want to eat then," says Rut Bark, one of the residents, to P4 Västmanland.

The savings increase the risk of malnutrition among the elderly, warns Kent Nilsson, adjunct professor of public health at Mälardalen University.

"Nutrient density, such as fat and protein, is extremely important. We know that a large proportion of the elderly suffer from malnutrition," he says.
