Cash use has declined rapidly in Sweden, but now all parties have voted yes to a new cash law.
With some exceptions, grocery stores and pharmacies will be able to accept banknotes and coins. Banks will also more clearly ensure that there are places for cash deposits throughout the country.
Half a million Swedes live in digital exclusion. These are people who depend on cash in their everyday lives. This includes the elderly, the disabled, the homeless, and women at risk of crime, said SD's Dennis Dioukarev in the parliamentary debate.
The government is also urged to investigate whether more parts of society, such as authorities, need to be able to accept cash to a greater extent.
The legal changes will enter into force on July 1, 2026.
