Around 30-40 millimeters of rain is expected to fall over Västernorrland during the night towards Monday and into the day. Locally, it can be more.
It is less than what fell during the previous weekend's rain weather– but SMHI is closely monitoring the situation, according to meteorologist Linnea Rehn Wittskog.
We have daily meetings with the County Administrative Board and MSB. There are many damages that need to be repaired and more rain can make it more difficult, she says to TT.
Two weeks
During Saturday, Västernorrland has mostly dry weather. Sunday may bring some showers, but already in the evening, it can start raining more heavily, according to SMHI.
The floods have heavily affected traffic and, among other things, two freight trains derailed. One of them was loaded with hazardous waste, including ammunition. That train derailed on the main line at Skorped outside Örnsköldsvik.
It may take two weeks before the train traffic on the main line is up and running again, according to the Swedish Transport Administration
It's a gigantic job, says Anders Sundberg, whose haulage company is working on the site, to Sveriges radio.
Sensitive area
The other train, which was loaded with timber, derailed on the Ådalsbanan. For the affected section, the prognosis is at least a week.
We have a measuring wagon out today that checks the condition of the railway, both on Ådalsbanan and Botniabanan. You read everything that is required to determine if the railway is safe to drive on, says Sara Lindström, press communicator at the Swedish Transport Administration, to TT on Saturday.
Linnea Rehn Wittskog at SMHI points out that the landscape in Västernorrland has special geographical conditions that make the area sensitive to large amounts of rain.
There are many mountains, and when the rain comes, it pours down and collects in the watercourses. Small streams can become like large rivers or rivers, she says.
Up to 100 millimeters of rain fell in a short time on Sunday, September 7, and mainly affected Härnösand, Kramfors, Sollefteå, and Örnsköldsvik.
Some 40 roads were damaged or washed away and two trains derailed.
The rain has caused major flooding, including in Kubbe outside Örnsköldsvik, where large parts of the village were under water.
