Saturday's attacks were the first for the USA against Yemen since Donald Trump took office as president.
At least 53 people are reported to have been killed and over 100 injured in attacks on, among other things, the capital Sanaa, according to Houthi-controlled health authorities.
"Overwhelming force"
The USA's national security adviser Michael Waltz tells ABC News on Sunday that the airstrikes "targeted several Houthi leaders and took them out".
In another interview, Waltz says that the attacks on the Iran-backed movement are also directed against Iran in some sense.
We struck with overwhelming force and made it clear to Iran that enough is enough, he tells Fox News.
The Houthis claim in a statement that the group has struck back by attacking the American aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman and its convoy in the Red Sea. 18 rockets and drones are said to have been fired at the American ships, according to the movement.
The claim is unconfirmed. Two American military sources tell AP that they have "not detected" any threats.
More attacks to come
The USA motivates the attacks in the last 24 hours by saying that they want to deter the Houthis from attacking shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
Foreign Minister Marco Rubio tells CBS that more airstrikes are to be expected.
We will not let these people decide which ships can and cannot pass. To your question, how long will it go on? It will go on until they no longer have the capacity to do it, says Rubio.
Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Huthi threatens in a televised speech to resume attacks on American ships.
If the American aggression against our country continues, we will move forward with further escalation options, says al-Huthi.
Appeal from the UN
The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appeals for "restraint and an end to all military activities".
The Houthi movement has shaken global trade with a series of attacks on ships since the start of the Gaza war, described as revenge against Israel and its allies.
Since the ceasefire in the war began in January, no ships have been attacked. But the movement recently announced that it intends to start attacking Israeli ships again due to Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
