The rules for vitamin D fortification were tightened in 2018 and have had the positive effect of more children having sufficient vitamin D. Among four-year-olds, the proportion has increased to 40 percent, compared with 8 percent in 2003.
Even though around 60 percent of the children did not quite reach the recommended amount of vitamin D from food, none of the children who submitted blood tests had a deficiency in vitamin D. This is very positive, says Lotta Moraeus, dietitian at the Swedish National Food Agency, in a press release.
She points out that sunlight is also an important source of vitamin D.
The analysis was conducted by researchers at the University of Gothenburg in collaboration with the Swedish National Food Agency.
