About 1,200 households in the US were asked about their financial situation and whether they had to dig deep into savings or find emergency measures to cover food purchases. They were also asked whether the food had been sufficient for the households' children, and whether they had received assistance with food purchases.
The result was disappointing: “There has been a significant increase in households affected by the four issues,” the Fed writes.
The situation was compared to the COVID-19 pandemic when unemployment and food prices rose.
More than a third said they are forced to use savings for groceries - an increase of 8 percentage points. 15 percent said they rely on support, also an increase.
