On Friday, Moldova's parliament voted to appoint Munteanu as prime minister after he was nominated by the country's president, Maia Sandu.
"I have come to help, and I will do everything so that we (Moldova) will have joined the EU by 2028," Munteanu said in a previous TV interview, according to AFP.
Munteanu, 61, has no previous political experience and has made few public appearances, according to AFP. He has lived in Ukraine for several years, but moved away after Russia's full-scale invasion of the country in 2022.
Munteanu, who has previously worked in investments and as a university professor, holds both Moldovan, Romanian and American citizenship.
His party, the pro-EU PAS, won a majority of seats when the country went to the polls in September. The election was described as a fateful choice between a future path towards the West or increased Russian influence.
