Modo's Sensation - Shut Out the League Leaders

Mikkel Aagaard made sure the upset became a reality. The Danish forward scored two goals when bottom-dwellers Modo defeated league-leaders Frölunda on the road with 3–0 in SHL. It feels damn nice, says Modo coach Mattias Karlin to TV4.

Modo had six straight losses in SHL – lost 4–0 to 4–5 against Färjestad last – and was the only team in the league that hadn't won away.

Frölunda led the series and had won nine out of ten home matches.

Nothing spoke in favor of the bottom team.

Then it went as it went.

It felt like we had given ourselves hell to play all the way out and the guys did it in a good way, says Karlin.

"Ended up in the zone"

Mikkel Aagaard scored 1–0 in the cross in the beginning of the third period precisely when the home team had become full-strength after a penalty.

Frölunda tried to come back, but Modo goalkeeper Olle Eriksson Ek took everything – 37 shots.

I ended up in the famous zone. I've felt good all year even though it's been tough for the team, says Modo goalkeeper to TV4 Play.

When Frölunda took out goalkeeper Tobias Normann with over two minutes left, Modo decided the game.

Own goal by former Modo player

Home forward Mikael Ruohomaa, previously in Modo, sent the puck into his own goal when he missed a pass and the goal was credited to Alexander True, the last Modo player on the puck. Then Aagaard chipped in 3–0.

Last season, the Danish forward scored 16 goals when Modo stayed up as newcomers – this heavy autumn, it had only been two goals before Saturday's match in Scandinavium.

We haven't won much lately, so it feels damn nice. Hopefully, we'll be strengthened by this win, says Mattias Karlin.

Modo remains in last place in the table with ten points up to the secure spot above the relegation line.

For Frölunda, it has been pitch-black after the national team break. Two matches, two losses, and not a single goal scored.

When the Frölunda players left a sold-out Scandinavium, 12,044 spectators, it was to boos and whistles.
