The place where nurse Alex Pretti was shot to death on Saturday is filled with Minnesotans laying flowers and gathering in small groups to mourn.
Among those who arrived there were several nurses and other healthcare personnel.
One of them, nurse Kelley Anaas, says Saturday's shooting shows that it's time to do something now.
"It's time for nurses to come together and take a stand, for all healthcare professionals to step up and say this is enough," she told the Minnesota Star Tribune.
Her colleague Erin Williamson agrees.
"A lot of us can see ourselves in Renee (Nicole Good) and Alex. We feel a connection with someone who just wants to help people," she says.
Many gathered
Hundreds have gathered at the site, many are there to provide warmth to the mourners in the cold in the form of coffee, hot chocolate and soup. Others who call for protests there are asked not to.
"No, we are protesting peacefully here," a woman told the newspaper.
At the same time, over a thousand people gathered in downtown Minneapolis for a demonstration against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), demanding that the agency leave the state, reports The New York Times.
Tired, but determined
Democratic Governor Tim Walz also echoed that demand, and at a press conference he reiterated it. Addressing Washington, D.C., he said:
That's enough. And to President Trump: You can end this today.
He also said that many children are hiding out of fear.
Many of us read about Anne Frank growing up. Someone will write that story about Minnesota.
But he also had a clear message for the Americans he represents in his state:
We are tired, but determined. We are peaceful, but we will never forget. We are angry, but we will not give up hope. And above all, we stand clearly united.
