Crown Princess Mette-Marit is mentioned several hundred times in the released documents, reports NRK and others. They show that she borrowed Jeffrey Epstein's home in Florida.
According to the Norwegian court, Mette-Marit lived in the residence with a friend for four days.
“Deeply sorry”
The Norwegian Crown Princess said in a statement to NRK on Saturday night that she regrets her contacts with Epstein. She also expressed “her deepest sympathy and solidarity” with his victims:
"Jeffrey Epstein is responsible for his actions. I must take responsibility for not checking Epstein's background better and for not understanding quickly enough what kind of person he was," she says, and continues:
"I deeply regret it, and it is a responsibility I must take. I showed poor judgment and regret having any contact with Epstein at all. It is simply embarrassing," she continues.
The Norwegian court has previously confirmed that Mette-Marit met Epstein on several occasions between 2011 and 2013, and that they were introduced to each other through mutual acquaintances. It was also during this period that the home was loaned.
In the newly released files, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the brother of the British king, also appears. In an email, Epstein wrote to what is believed to be Mountbatten-Windsor that he wanted to introduce him to a Russian woman.
The former prince was stripped of his royal titles last year due to his association with Epstein.
Trump's booed minister
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who was recently booed in Davos, is also mentioned in the new documents. The documents show he visited Epstein's Caribbean island with his family in 2012, The Guardian reports.
Others mentioned in the documents include Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump and Steve Bannon. Elon Musk also appears, as does the Swedish Princess Sofia.
Jeffrey Epstein was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2008 for sex trafficking. In July 2019, he was charged with abusing dozens of underage girls between 2002 and 2005.
That same year, he was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell. U.S. authorities said it appeared to be a suicide.
